The best thing to do in a situation like that is to just do it. Let them know that what they offer is not what you're looking for as diplomatically and gently but directly as possible. Put yourself in their shoes. Would you appreciate honest, constructive and direct feedback if you were in the same situation? I know I would. There's no easy way out of it. The more you have to rely on auditions and advertisements the more you're going to come across these situations. However, if you are finding musicians through rrecommendations through your network you wont need to be the bearer of bad news as much.
